The Shakya janapada (also called Vajji or Lichchavi janapada) was located on the Indo-Nepal border north of the modern town of Gorakhpur. Its capital was Kapilavastu. The birthplace of the Buddha, Lumbini, was ten miles east of Kapilavastu. The Buddha's father, Suddhodhana, was, according to Rajgor, the elected president of the Shakyas. Some of these coins may well have been minted during the time of the Buddha's life.

MUGHAL : Jahangir: Silver heavy rupee (Jahangiri), Kashmir, undated! VERY RARE

Image
MUGHAL : Jahangir: Silver heavy rupee (Jahangiri), Kashmir, undated! VERY RARE Obverse : Persian couplet "sakhat nurani" Reverse : AH date 1020 and mint Kashmir below ; Date undated! issued c. AH 1017-1020 (=1608-12 CE) Weight : 13.59 ; Reference KM ---155.3 Note : At one point, Jahangir experimented with a new denomination, in which the silver weight was 20% higher than in the rupee; this new coin was called the Jahangiri. This coin, minted in Kashmir, is an example ... note the heavy weight of the coin. Later, a 25% overweight coin, the sawai (sawa means one and a quarter), was also tried. Neither of these experiments was popular with the traders and so the coinage returned to the normal rupee standard. This coin is very unusual in that, where the AH date is normally inscribed on the coin, we have here a rosette. Not listed in KM .
